Joe and Lizzie Oglesby - graduation from the University of Mississippi.

Joe graduated from law school on Saturday. We are leaving Oxford, Mississippi and moving to Richmond, Virginia so that he can take the Virginia bar this summer. I will be working full time at MacLaren Jewelers, as Director of Design. Hope all is well in the SCAD grad world! We have had an incredible three years in Mississippi - we will miss it but look foward to spending time with our family and friends in Virginia.

I recently gave my students an assignment to create photo blogs and post two images every week. I thought it would be a good idea to give myself this assignment as well both to show them what I shoot, and to force myself to shoot more often. Here it is:

Oh yeah, I live in Taiwan now. Heather and I are doing mission work teaching at a high school run by our church. We've been here since August and plan to return to the U.S. in July. It's been pretty cool. Things I miss most: my family, familiar food and being able to communicate with people. I've learned a little Chinese, but it's crazy hard. Picasa - Great for intro level classes, and situations where you have no budget for Photoshop/Lightroom. Obviously geared for students who are not planning to study photography on a deeper level and therefore will probably never want to fork out the cash for these programs themselves. It's now available for Mac too. I'm experimenting with Picasa Web Albums as a form of assignment submission, since I also have no budget for a printer (and can't expect my students to make prints on their own). I'm also thinking this will be really useful for collaboration between the yearbook photo team and copy team. (Writing captions, etc...)

Oh and one more thing... I have a mustache today.

Wish you could have all been there for the 6th Annual Oxford Film Fest!
It was tons of fun, and it was really exciting to see my short film, Waiting To Tingle, on the big screen.

Tons of people came to town for the event, and I got to party with Professor Michael Chaney from SCAD. He served as one of the judges for the festival. As it turns out, he is from Vicksburg, MS, so we had lots of venison recipes to compare and contrast. Ha!

Even in these times of economic uncertainty, one thing remains quite certain: there is so much art to look forward to! So much so that there's no way that we can see it all or take it all in!

A short film I made a few years back will be shown at the upcoming 6th Annual Oxford Film Festival! If anyone is rolling through Oxford during the weekend of February 5-9th, 2009, stop by and check out the film fest! It is THE most amazing annual event in Oxford.

In other news, I've been asked to show a few pieces from my thesis work at my 10 year high school reunion coming up in April! I'll keep you posted on how that goes...

University of Mississippi Museum July 20th through September 21, 2008
Artist William Christenberry visited Ole Miss, just in time for the circus that is the preparation for the first Presidential Debate. Unfortunately, he will miss the actual debate and other related festivities. Christenberry, 71 years-old and an Alabama native, experienced firsthand the thick clouds of the intense civil rights movement that swept the South in his younger years. He is most famous in the art market for his photographic documentation of the rapidly disappearing vernacular architecture of Alabama. However, he is currently showing sculptures and wall art, decades in the making, that address the darkness and turmoil of racism and more specifically, the hatred forever entombed within the Ku Klux Klan.
His exhibition at Ole Miss included sketches, paintings and sculpture. The real attraction for all those who are not familiar with his work, is Christenberry's "Klan Tableau Room."
The importance of this work is boundless. The reaction to the work on campus at Ole Miss was all across the board. What truly disturbed me, was not the work itself, but the way the tableau room was disguised. A long line, two security guards and a big black curtain kept visitors from just happening upon what is the creepy, Halloween-ish Klan Tableau Room.
Once inside the twenty by twenty foot room, the lighting is dim, with blue and red spotlights on the strange little Klan dolls posed in various positions. Many are covered in dripping wax, pierced with needles, bound by Confederate flags, or packed into rusty cages. Visitors walked in serious silence around the square path, some taking the time to bend down to see the small figures. Others giggled at the strangeness of it all. Some looked truly alarmed and moved more quickly through the exhibit.
It seemed that Christenberry's Klan dolls and drawings within the tableau room depicted the Klan torturing and humiliating itself, rather than torturing its usual victims. This fact is what makes Christenberry's work so very accurate and complete. In a world where one hatred fades, only to be filled by a new hatred, it is important to note that those who hate so much, so fiercely and so fully, can never love themselves.
Joseph Williams, a senior in Journalism at Ole Miss noted in The Daily Mississippian that Teresa Wiltz, a writer for the Washington Post called Christenberry's Klan subject matter too, "old-school." To me, and to Williams, Wiltz's dismissal of the work all together is quite superficial. Wiltz, who experienced the Klan first hand on several occasions, points out that Christenberry's neglect to include actual Klan victims through history in the tableau room makes his work obsolete, when in all reality this work will always be very relevant. Williams writes,
"Few would say Picasso's 'Guernica' is 'old-school' as the Spanish Civil Way is so long past. Such work holds up a particular event only to show us the universal nature of hate and violence embedded therein. To miss this point is to miss the point of art."The only thing that I'm sorry that Christenberry will miss is the great circus in town that is the Debate 08! It is interesting to note that all roads leading into campus are blocked off starting right at the University Museum. It seems that the "Site/Possession" Exhibit is over, but the University Museum website has not been updated since August 30, 2008 and the next exhibit is not yet on the map. Perhaps letting the exhibit lapse into debate weekend would have been too much for Oxford to handle. The town is busy washing its face and shaking out the patriotic bunting. Not to mention all the goodies the folks are busy making over at Walmart!

Here's the group photograph of my recent class from a two-week workshop in Maine. My first time teaching high-school students and it was a blast. So much energy and fearlessness. I even came in one morning to find that they all had markered outlet tattoos like mine on their wrists.

I bought a new scanner on ebay and picked it up today in Sarasota, about 4 hours from Miami. It's a drum scanner, working at 4000 ppi up to 8x10 film. This gives a print around 8x10 feet. I'm very excited to get it, especially since the guy threw in about $4500 worth of accessories when I got there today. I'll post some results when I get it running.

Hello to all of my photography enthusiasts!

LOOK3 in Charlottesville, Virginia last weekend was fantastic as always. Mary Ellen Mark gave a really wonderful interview with Alex Chadwick of NPR. I wish you ALL could have heard her speak. She is truly a remarkable woman and unbelievable photographer. She stills shoots with film, and said that she has bought up the last of Polaroid's discontinued 20x24" film that she uses for her super large format land camera. Read more about her work, and her current show that I saw in Charlottesville.

I also saw part of Joel Peter Witkin's interview with Alex Chadwick, and was very disappointed by his commentary. I was really hoping he would say something extraordinary, but he was very simple and unapologetic about his work. When his slideshow began, there was a technical glitch, and he could see the images on the laptop, but for a moment the audience saw nothing on the big theater screen. "Oh this must be the Ray Charles version!" he said. Sort of a bad joke to start an interview with, in my opinion. I would not recommend going to see his work on the big screen, at such a magnified angle, people were getting up and walking out of his talk, and I think probably some people got sick in the bathroom downstairs. I truly appreciate that his work goes uncensored and I hope that we will continue to have such freedoms in our country, but man his work is vile. I had hoped that his commentary would somehow redeem the cold disregard for human remains he displays in his work, but I left, feeling completely unimpressed, after the showing of "The Kiss" which some of you may remember mentioned during story time with Craig Stevens in B&W Craft.

Anywho - it was great to return to the festival for the second year. Nick Nichols, the creator of the festival was a few seats behind us. He is such a rockstar. Sally Mann came back again this year, and she sat two rows behind us. She is such a mystery, I love catching a glimpse of her.
I grabbed Mary Ellen Mark and made her pose for a photo with me to send to Jaclyn Cori Norman. Jaclyn used to tell the story about when she met Mary Ellen and how this one thing that Mary Ellen said to her left a huge impression on her life and her work. Voila!

Hello everyone!

Just a quick update from me in Utah. The year is almost over, commencement is on Saturday, and I figured I'd show off some of my students' work on my blog. It was a great first year here and I feel like I've learned so much. My program is coming together really nicely, as of right now we have about 13 majors and quite a few freshman coming in as majors in the fall. I only have a few more classes to propose in the fall and the curriculum will be complete. Sorry I dropped off the face of the planet... March stunk... my 5 year old niece died on the first and thus I took an unplanned 10 day trip back to NY, got back to Huntsville for 2 days before going to Denver (which was AWESOME -- got to see a whole bunch of scad people, even an undergrad prof and also got my work reviewed by a whole bunch of people) and then the last two weeks I have been playing nonstop catch up. So, from the run on sentence, I hope that you get the idea what kind of month I had... but, anyways, I'm doing something pretty similar to what Jeremias did...

My school is looking to hire a full time tenure track Graphic Design Prof. Most likely it will be someone right out of grad school, so if you know anyone looking, drop them my email.

I know this is a headsup way in advance, and most of you are so far away that you probably won't be making a pilgrimage to Charlottesville, Virginia this summer - but I went to this festival last year and it was absolutely fantastic. It's smaller and more intamite than the bigger fests, and the interviews with Alex Chadwick are not to be missed.

I recall two SCAD professors who frequently mentioned two very important photographers that will be present at the Festival of the Photograph in June. I will def be attending this year - and tickets sell out about 3 weeks prior to the event.

Jaclyn Cori Norman would be pleased to know that Mary Ellen Mark will be exhibiting, and I'm sure Craig Stevens would love to tease Joel-Peter Witkin during the INsight Conversation with Alex Chadwick. In addition, James Natchwey, 5-time winner of the Robert Capa Gold Medal, will complete this amazing trio of artists.

I had a fantastic time this past weekend at the Oxford Film Festival in Mississippi. If any of you are still making short films, please consider submitting them for the festival next year. My two favorite films this year were Kabluey and The Listening Project. Please check them out if you get a chance.

I just got word that I'm one of 5 finalists in the 36 Exposures Challenge.

They had over 100 proposal submissions, so it is a great honor to be a part of the 5 artists/photographers chosen.

I will post my proposal later, when I get on my other computer.

Now I am waiting for my roll of film and organizing my shoot.

Here's a blurb about the challenge:

"THE RULES:

Stage One ~ The Idea:

Write a short (up to 100 words) blurb about an idea, concept, theme, or project that, using a film camera, you think you can shoot 36 photographs of. We also ask you to indicate a preferred 35mm film from the following list (although we are open to alternatives, but unfortunately not medium/large formats):

~ Kodak Portra 160VC
~ Kodak Portra 400VC
~ Kodak Portra 800
~ Kodak BW400CN

Keep the blurb short and simple, and since this will not be graded as an essay, don't fret over grammar, punctuation, or style. We are looking for intriguing ideas that fall into the same general subject matter criteria as any submissions to FILE magazine, not the next Susan Sontag. If you are unfamiliar with our criteria, refer to the Submissions page for details. (You will also want to read the details of Stage Two, which follow, as they may effect how you craft your idea.)

Five people will be chosen from the submissions and move to:

Stage Two ~ The Images:

The selected photographers will each be mailed a 36-exposure roll of film that they must use to complete the idea, concept, theme, or project they described in their blurb. They will have roughly two weeks to complete this task (no later than January 31), and when they are finished, they will mail the roll of film to FILE Labs™, where our Lab Chimps will process and scan the photos. The negatives will be returned to the photographers at the end of the contest. Ownership of all images is retained by the artists, as described in our Disclaimers and Weasel Words. The entire roll of images will be presented in a slideshow in the order they were shot, and selections from each of the final galleries will also be featured on Flak Photo. Our esteemed Editorial Board will judge the final work, and fabulous prizes will be awarded."

Our Art on Campus committee meets in the spring semester, April 08, to review slide submissions for the following academic year. We generally mount six to seven group exhibitions per academic year. As photographers of the modern day, we know that our pictures should outlive us. While this may never change, there is a company out there that promises to let you, your pet, or your loved ones live vicariously through you photographs.

Inkafterlife.com will use any ashes you send them to make a special inkjet ink and then print an edition of prints from them. I really think that Roland Barthes would have enjoyed writing about this company and probably would have had his mother made into a very Punctum picture.

My question to you all is what image you would want printed? Something you've made? An image of you at your happiest? Something more... ambiguous? Please tell.

Pretty dead as of late!

so guys since we seem to not be posting much now that we are all running all over, i thought i would throw something out there to see if we can get talking again. ill just tell you want i am doing and ask to hear the same from you.

currently i am getting ready to go to work (eww) but the large picture is that i am getting ready for thesis which will be in the end of Nov. i am not going crazy just yet up feel i will be soon! yikes! we now, for those not here, have a thesis class that Jenny is teaching. it is a good idea because it is like photo arts and you get help with the paper, but we have to have our paper done by the end of the quarter. i know it is only 10pages but that with trying to put a show together, i am feeling the pressure.

enough about me, how are you folks who are out there in the non SCAD world? and who is planning on going to the southeast SPE so i can know to look for faces?

CEDAR CITY, Utah —

The owner of a photography studio has been arrested for hurling metal projectiles — bolts, small bearings and copper-jacketed bullets — at the front window of a rival photo studio.
"I just got angry, and I let it build and build," said Kurtis Leany, the 51-year-old proprietor of Zion Photography. "It's the only way I knew to take it out."

Leany said he started getting angry at the owner of Studio West Photography a dozen years ago. He said Karl Hugh was "verbally trashing me" and stole his pageantry photography business this summer for the Miss Iron County competition. The studios are three blocks apart.

Hugh said he had no idea he was involved in a feud, adding, "Honestly, when I found out who it was, I couldn't believe it."

It wasn't the first time Hugh said he had been the victim of a window-bashing vandalism on his studio, home and car.

He slept Thursday night at his studio with a video camera ready.

"I thought, 'I'm gonna catch this guy,"' Hugh said. And he did — at 5:30 a.m. Friday.

Leany was booked into the Iron County jail on five counts of criminal mischief and released on $5,000 bail.

Leany, who used a slingshot, said he will pay for damages.

"I'm actually glad I got caught. I needed this abrupt stop," he said. "I'm really sorry for what I did."

Known for Famous Photos, Not All of Them His

Joe O’Donnell,who died Aug. 9, hijacked and claimed as his own some of the 20th century’s most famous images.

This article in today's New York Times discusses photographer Joe O'Donnell and how he had taken credit for photographs, such as on of John John's salute of his fathers coffin, that were not his own. I just find it interesting that many of these photographs that are widely know were not, at the time, accredited to any one photographer, which now causes problems with who gets credit for what photo. It seems that since the 40's 50's and 60's, photography and more specifically photojournalism has become much more important. Now all photos in papers are credited to someone, and there are photojournalism stars such as James Nachtway, and agencies like VII.

I just thought this was an interesting article, especially since it seems that O’Donnell wasn’t sued for any kind of copy right infringement, and wanted to hear what you guys thought about it.

Dear Bernd,

Yesterday I received the very unexpected news of your death. This news is made all the more painful for me as we did not get to see each other in the past year. You do know, however, how enormously important your influence was—and is—not only to me, but also to a whole generation of younger people.

You and Hilla have produced an invaluable and multi-faceted body of work that has served as an invaluable point of reference for us. We adapted and developed many stylistic characteristics of your technique. Yet, in my opinion, there is another crucial factor that ensured the uniqueness of the Becher School: teacher-artists can be found anywhere, but only a few succeed in transmitting your kind of drive to their students.

You were never a power-hungry man, abusing your international fame for political or institutional influence, but, instead, you stoically endured the criticisms of your academic peers. These made you all the more determined to pursue your unconventional teaching methods, which included affording absolute priority to your own and your students’ artistic visions.

When your students came to you with their work, you often reflected upon it late into the night, and took the time to comment, using apt art-historical examples. By the end of these private tutorials, not only were your floors covered with books, but books were also perched on top of the many red-labelled Agfa film cartons, tripods and ladders that were strewn about your studio. A permanent chemical odour signalled the authenticity of your work and living space—where, for the life of me, I cannot remember ever seeing a comfy sofa. Having spent my childhood and youth in over-designed advertising studios, it was a key experience to have such an insight into your world. I still remember my tipsy walk home—through that enchanted gateway in front of your studio, past that red van, which was packed with your heavy ladders of all sizes.

Bernd, I thank you for this important time in my life and hope that you will continue quietly to guide me through today’s art circus with your dry humour and carefree attitude.

I just gave the Cranes Silver Rag a whirl and think I found my new favorite paper. First of all, it gave an excellent range of tonality with the Epson Ultra Chrome Glossy Inks, and I have to admit that the finish really did make me think of my old fashioned Ilford Multigrade IV fiber based glossy.

Ooo, updates, fun!

I still am adjunct at A&M here in Normal Alabama, but there's talk of this position becoming full time. I like it here okay, but have to admit that this coming season I am going to be hitting the job market with a vengence. I have two sections of Intro, one sections of advanced, and then Friday night Art Appreciation. I put in for a digital class to be added to the books, but, typical of the south, everything... moves.... so... slow... Maybe next year.

I'm stoked about the work I've been making lately -- go look at my website if you haven't been there in a few months, it's all changed since June or so. I also got invited to be part of a show at Cazenovia College in NY -- first time I'm in something I didn't send in for. Websites can really help you out!

I have a new other job -- wholesale framing for a very tiny family owned business instead of the retail for the man framing job. I like it much better, especially since I am working out a deal with the owner to have free use of his 9600 in exchange for doing his photoshop work. That already means that in the faculty show I have a couple of brand spanking new 30x40 from my Lay of the Land Series (the tire tracks in the corn and one of a shopping cart that is not up there yet). I also have a tight grid of 4x5 contact prints of the Stick and Stones stuff -- thanks to my friend Matt for hanging it for me! There's no way I could have gotten 24 8x10 frames hung up one inch apart in a four foot wide space without some help. Where are the days of the guys from SCAD hanging your work up for you???

All these interesting updates going on. It is nice to hear. I'll just keep adding tidbits.

I am gearing up for a big first quarter here in Louisiana. I have 2 classes this term. 1) Lighting, which is the first of three that students take consecutively. So it is essentially a year long lighting course, which is quite exciting. This class really won't be like anything I ever took in school, essentially focused on control over an environment, no matter what it is. 2) Photoshop. I'm an old-hand at this class, so it isn't a worry at all.

Things are nice here. The school is set up nicely and the photo department is expanding and expected to be crazy. Joy, Frank and I will see to that. Keep your eyes out for talents looking at grad school, as we will be recruiting next year.

Well sounds like some of us from the 2006 graduating class are beginning to do things. That's Great! It also appears that everybody has come to the consensus that moving is one of the worst things to do in life.

Since everyone is in an updating mood here goes:

This is my last week before meetings begin and classes start on the 27th.

Rachel will be taking 2 German language classes this fall and is hoping to get a part time writing job at the local newspaper.

I have to restructure the 2 existing photo classes and create 3-4 new ones (which I have good ideas about already) to complete the program, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Here are my ideas...

"Intro to Photo" (this is a general education elective as well as a requirement for majors, which we already have a few of!)

"Photo 2" (Primarily technical stuff, digital... photoshop)

"Photo History" (From the beginning until now in 15 weeks!)

"Lighting" (Still-life and portraiture, some indoor location work as well)

"The Contemporary Landscape" (I'm teaching this in a 3 week intensive semester in May and it is about landscape photography, outdoor lighting and so forth...)

and finally...

"Film in a Digital Age" (Focuses on the use of film, the students will learn to shoot and develop 4x5 film, 4x5 camera functions, scanning film, contact prints (we don't have, nor will we get any enlargers, at this point) and stuff like that...)

What do you guys think?

...and lastly does anyone know where I can buy "good" but "relatively cheap" 4x5 cameras? That is the one equipment snag that seems to want to cost a lot, and we don't have a lot, we have a little, but maybe that class will run next year or the following...

So here's the update on me and the wife: I got a job at Atlantic Union College. I'll be starting classes the end of August. I'm teaching Photo I, Photo II, Digital Imaing and Web Design. So that should be fun.

We moved last week. I hate moving. Every five minutes I ask Heather "Hon, do you know where my _______ (fill in the blank) is?" "Yeah, it's in a box somewere." Fun stuff. The married life is good, and I highly recommend it.

We are going to Thailand over Christmas break. That will most certianly rock. I just so happen to be a huge fan of Thai food (so is Heather), so I'm planning on some good eatin'.

And like the shirt says, I am keeping the dream alive. Here I am after unloading my stuff in Louisiana. You're probably thinking, "Damn, Jay must have moved a ton of dirt from the North to the South." Well, you would be right. And why not? Didn't our ancestors also bring earth from Europe to the Americas? Don't answer that, just nod your head and agree.

Anyway, I'm here and settling in nicely. My house is about twice the size I thought it was, so if anyone would like to visit, I should have no problem housing the entire SCAD Grad crew with ease.

Floating Art
So there was this artist, Duke Riley, from Brooklyn who thought he would recreate the first American sub and float it out to the Queen Mary 2 and I guess see what would happen. I am not quite sure what to make of all this and would like to her some feed back on what you guys think.

I just received this article about NYC thinking about forcing permits upon groups of people taking pictures or filming in public areas, like sidewalks. This bill does not distinguish between professionals and amateurs, any one standing around video taping a group of friends for more than 10 minutes could be detained even though they probably don't know about the silly law. Yet another sad enforcement against creative output.

As I am in Chicago, about to go see the huge Jeff Wall show, this article seemed particularly applicable. Basically, if I wanted to go try my hand at something Wall-esque, I would have to obtain some pretty series permits simply because I have a tripod and a group of people. I guess it's a good thing I'm in Chicago tonight.

Pretty weak.

Hey you guys! I just got back from a trip to Belgium to visit a friend that lives there, and we also went to Paris and while I was there I ran into these American kids at a bar who are friends with Steve Aishman!! They were at the museum school in boston while Aishman was teaching there! Here is the photo of us at some ex-patriot pub hangout. The guy actually was a TA for Aishman at some point. Small world, eh?

Also, I have a SCAD friend who is looking for people to live with in Maine over the summer. Please tell me if you know any SCAD peeps that will be at the Maine workshops this summer. Hope all is well with everyone! I love seeing what everyone is doing on this blog. Especially Al riding side-saddle! I am moving to Oxford, Mississippi in the fall. I recently went to the local camera store and picked up a "broken" digital camera for $15. Since it was so cheap, I decided to use it to try out a new idea I call the "Flying Camera" series. This is #16. I set the timer and and throw the camera in the air. Once I catch it (assuming I catch it, its not guaranteed) I check the results. I don't know what to do with it yet, but I wanted to try something I can't do with my 8x10.

Expired Polaroids
Unexpected exposure

This haiku was inspired by a little treasure I found yesterday... about 150 shots of ancient sx-70 polaroid film. In the last 6 years this film has been frozen through two Minnesota winters (a big no no) and heated in a shed (a big no no). But I decided to shoot it all up casually. The caustic spills out everytime, adding some excitement to my life. Orange dots and stripes appear readily and the exposure is far less predictable than usual. I call this set 8:15 AM.

So yesterday was the unofficial end to my class which coincided with the PRC's lecture series. Andres Serrano met with the students for the final interview and it was spectacular. The mp3 will be up shortly! The students, again, expressed how wonderful it was for Al's students to listen to their efforts with Christenberry. I think that made them realize a few things about what they can do in life. Thanks again, Al!

The long drive to Chicago was well worth the trouble. Apparently I came one weekend too early and missed a pile of excellent photo shows opening for the big Chicago art fairs... oh well.

First stop, R.A.S.P.H. at Edelman Gallery. Sorry, I didn't take installation images, Catherine Edelman would not have appreciated that. So... go see the show when it makes it's way around to you. The work was beautiful. It's mounted to Aluminum. The print itself has weight and thickness due to the work done to the print, but yet the finish is perfectly even and deceptive.

This set of work runs along the same theme as their previous series, but is actually more somber. My theory is that the work was purposefully not as playful with the imagery in order to maintain seriousness when color was introduced... but that was just my thought. It is a small show, but provides so much to contemplate and simply stare at.

After that I hit MCA's Exposed show. It was a gathering of what they see to be some of the most influential work over the last 40 years. It was a terrific show, arranged by catagories of 1) Constructed 2) Portrait 3) Appropriation.

Yes, the museum did understand that those are just parts of the medium during that time, but they couldn't do everything and have such a great, cohesive show. The highlights for me... an Alfredo Jaar installation and the Ed Ruscha books (which I have always under-appreciated.)

I was blown away by the perfect quality of Nathan Baker's prints when they showed up here in Minneapolis, but seeing more at Schneider Gallery was a huge treat. Seriously, these prints are amazing to look at, technically unsurpassed and conceptually interesting. I really thought that this piece had broke off the wall, there is even a hole where it breaks the drywall, but apparently it is a very clever hoax... LOVE IT!

Sinatra has been in my head since. Ah, Chicago, that's my kind of town.

Greetings Comrades.

I need your help. Do not mistake this for pitiful begging like a cowardly dog, for that is NOT my way. I would like your opinion, despite the potential hit to my fragile pride, on this new artist statement. I revised this one for the older set of work because I wanted something much shorter. The question is whether it makes sense (in the most minimal way.)? Some of the spots I want my work really only publish short statements not as explanations, but introductions, so keep this in mind.

Enjoy.

Wandering about one morning in the low country, the young man finds a strange structure in the middle of nowhere. At once, as he has always done with encountered oddities, he theorizes its purpose. Using photography, storytelling and concepts of modern physics, the dilapidated and half-sunken building is given new reality. Similar to a physicist, who must recontextualize scenarios in order to describe the distant abstractions that cannot be probed with human senses, Jay Gould applies ideas of science to the curiosities encountered in his observations. His large scale photographs question limits, boundaries, and received assumptions in order to present the viewer with a unique view of reality that, like modern physics, uses aesthetic judgment and contemplation as its prime yardstick and blurs the line between science and art.
